The MIC is an online course worth 16 hours of continuing professional development.

Learn how to assess and manage minor illnesses seen in remote and austere environments.

It is a three-part programme that includes the Minor Emergencies Course, Minor Illness Course and Pharmacology for the Remote Medic.

This course aims to provide innovative and expert medical skills for the operational, deployed and offshore practitioners to become better and more proficient in their professional careers.

MIC Course Content

8 Lessons

1. Core Skills

​This module includes the skills required for taking a clinical history whilst working in remote clinics. It covers: History Taking, Physical Examination, Differential Diagnosis, Clinical Reasoning, Prescription & Administration Of Drugs, Medical Documentation and Referral & Follow-Up

2. Respiratory Diseases

This module includes: A Review Of Anatomy & Physiology, Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Allergic Rhinitis, Common Cold, Influenza, Pneumonia, Asthma and COPD

3. Cardiovascular Diseases​

​This module includes: Review Of Anatomy & Physiology, Hypertension and Angina

4. Neurology Diseases

​This module includes: Review Of Anatomy & Physiology, Headaches, Dizziness, Neck Pain, General Approach To Pain Management, Motion Sickness, Insomnia, Stress, Anxiety and Depression

5. Gastrointestinal Diseases

This module includes: Review Of Anatomy & Physiology, Diarrhoea, Constipation, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, Dyspepsia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Roundworm Infection, Threadworm Infection, Acute Appendicitis, Haemorrhoids

6. Genitourinary Diseases

​This module includes: Review Of Anatomy & Physiology, Acute Cystitis, Chlamydial Genital Infection, Epididymitis, Testicular Torsion, Vaginitis, Dysmenorrhoea

7. Skin Diseases

This module includes: Anatomy and Physiology, Athletes foot, Furuncle/Boil, Contact Dermatitis, Dry Skin, Scabies, Insect Bites & Stings, Head Lice, Bed Bugs, Lyme Disease, Skin Warts, Wound Management, Ingrown Toenail, Fungal Nail Infections, Sunburn

8. Diseases of the Ears, Nose, Eyes and Throat​

This module includes: Anatomy And Physiology, Epistaxis, Sinusitis, Sore Throat, Aphthous Ulcer, Acute Otitis Externa, Acute Otitis Media, Styes, Allergic Conjunctivitis, Common Dental Issues.​

MIC Final Exam

The final exam is an open book and taken online. The pass mark is 80% or higher. There are 35 multiple-choice questions, and you are given one hour to complete them. There are no retests for this exam. If you fail this exam, you must retake the entire course.

 

Who is this for?

Paramedics, remote medics, and expedition medics need to develop head knowledge and hand knowledge of minor injuries they may see while working in the Middle East, on oil rigs, transit vessels and remote clinics worldwide. This course provides an excellent background on the most common presenting injuries and conditions encountered by those who manage and treat adults in remote and austere settings.
