Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue
CoROM is partnered with Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue. They are a helicopter based EMS system located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. They are the only HEMS unit in Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro SAR was established in 2016 as the first and only helicopter-based search and rescue company in Tanzania. They provide coverage of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Tanzania’s National Parks.
Kilimanjaro SAR run the only High-Altitude Medicine Clinic in Africa.
The placement is located in Moshi. It is a forty-five minute drive from the main airport.
You will be working in the Saint Joseph hospital in Moshi when not responding to emergency callouts.
The average callout volume is four calls per day.
All proceeds of this placement are donated directly back into Moshi, Tanzania. The College provides free training and certification for their HEMS doctors as well as offering free Wilderness First Aid certifications for Kilimanjaro mountain guides, rangers and porters.
Delegates get free access and certification to the Aeromedical Retrieval Medicine for Extreme Altitudes course.
KilimanjaroSAR has the highest standards for healthcare professionals working on their helicopters. Only the following qualifications will be accepted:
- clinical officers
All delegates must have current certification in flight medicine or critical care medicine. This certification can be the board certification for Critical Care Paramedic or Flight Paramedic.

Dates and Cost
Duration: Up to three months
Cost: €800 per month
For any delegate coming for more than six weeks KilimanjaroSAR will pay for:
- Return flights from home
- Gym access
- Small daily stipend
- Business visa
- Airport transfers
For any delegate coming for less than six weeks, KilimanjaroSAR will pay for all of the above except flights.
